Construction underway at Umhlanga Arch

4 May 2018, Friday

Umhlanga Arch broke ground in October 2017 and has since seen the site become very active with construction vehicles and workers. Having had 6 months pass, we share the substantial progress that has been made to date.

The beginning stages

The piling and foundation phase of our development has been highly complex, due to the size and magnitude of Umhlanga Arch. Having worked around the intricacies, we are now seeing some of our hard work showing, as construction has begun to rise from behind the site hoarding. The public will soon see Umhlanga Arch being built right in front of them, with the sight of columns, slabs and beams coming out the ground.

Building a foundation

When visiting the site, your eyes are immediately drawn to the vast volumes of soil excavated. Varying in height, the highest and lowest points of soil span over 6 stories. There has also been a considerable amount of concrete and steel work placed to date. As the structural construction progresses, the detailed mechanical, electrical and wet services, and architectural design is progressing apace to stay ahead of the critical path programme.

Aligning goals

We are working closely with our two major partner tenants in the development, namely the SMG BMW Umhlanga and the Hilton Garden Inn. It is important that during construction, we meet their design requirements and beneficial occupation dates going forward.

Keep watching as KwaZulu-Natal’s landscape transforms as the iconic Umhlanga Arch rises from the ground within the Ridgeside precinct.
